September 11, 1933 - January 31, 2010
G. Ross Darnell died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 31st. Ross was born in Oberlin, Kansas on September 11, 1933 to parents Lloyd and Marjorie. He grew up in Kansas and after graduation enlisted in the Air Force. Ross married the love of his life, Beth Baughman, on July 31, 1958 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. They raised two daughters and celebrated their 50th anniversary two summers ago.

Ross went to Officer Candidate School at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas where he received a reserve commission as a first lieutenant. He became an instructor navigator on the KC-135 and flew for the Strategic Air Command. Ross was selected to attend the Air Force Institute of Technology at the University of Oklahoma where he completed his degree in Industrial Engineering. He excelled in college and was invited into honorary academic engineering fraternities Sigma Tau and Tau Beta Pi. Ross was twice nominated for the prestigious Thurlow Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to the science of navigation. He flew an AC-47 gunship as a navigator in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam he was a staff officer at the Pentagon in the Directorate of Manpower. He retired as a Major in 1973 after 20 years service.

Ross and his family moved to Idaho Falls in 1973 where he worked for Westinghouse for 5 years at the Expended Core Facility. For 15 years, he worked for EG&G where he made significant contributions in the nuclear waste disposal field. He was passionate about the potential for nuclear energy as a clean, safe energy source. Ross retired in 1995.

Ross loved fishing, camping, and the outdoors. Tying flies and creating his own lures was something he especially enjoyed. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and spent many hours shooting skeet and trap. He sponsored a junior rifle team when he lived in Georgia. In 1984, he and Beth began building a log cabin in the Teton Valley near Driggs. Ross did almost all the work on the cabin himself. He completed the plumbing and electrical, and especially enjoyed building the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Over the years, the cabin has been a wonderful retreat for his entire family and will be treasured for years to come. Always, Ross especially loved the children and spent many hours playing with and entertaining them. One of the greatest joys in his life was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Beth Baughman Darnell, and two daughters, Karen Marie Sonnen (Chuck), Arvada, CO and Kris D’Antoni (Andra), Idaho Falls, ID, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, his brother Ray Darnell and his sisters Betty Elerbe and Helen Nolen.
