Jackie was born in Lausanne, Switzerland on July 28, 1924 to Arnold and Marguerite Delacretaz-Bugnard. At 4 years old, she moved with her parents to Villars-sur-Ollon, high in the Swiss mountains in the French-speaking section of Switzerland. Her father was an elementary school teacher.
Her childhood was idyllic. Her summers were spent hunting for mushrooms in the high-mountain forests, and her winters, skiing in the Alps.
At 15, Jackie was sent to the German-speaking section of Switzerland to learn the language. At 19, she went to work at the Hotel Splendid, owned by her uncle, overlooking Lake Geneva. It was at this hotel, when in 1946, she met her future husband, Darrell C. Stoddard. Darrell was enlisted in military wartime service and was on leave in Switzerland for two days following the end of the war. The day he was to leave, he proposed to Jackie after knowing her for only one day. She responded by saying she would correspond with him by letter. They wrote to one another for over 2 years, and as their love grew, Jackie convinced her parents to allow her to travel to the United States to visit the young Stoddard, who was attending school at Jefferson Medical College in Pennsylvania. This time, Jackie accepted Darrell’s advances and they were married December 30, 1946 in Philadelphia. They subsequently moved to Idaho Falls in 1952 where Darrell opened a medical practice. Jackie and Darrell became the parents of six boys, and to Jackie’s dismay, no girls.
In 1972, Jackie started taking night classes offered by Ricks College (now BYU ID). In 1974, she was accepted into the nursing program and was a graduate in 1976 and became a registered nurse. She worked as an ICU and floor nurse for the next 24 years, enjoying every moment of it. She called nursing “my hobby”, as it was so fulfilling to her.
Jackie lost Darrell, the love of her life, on March 25, 2007. She is survived by her 6 sons, James, Steven (Lisa), Bruce (Terry), Tim, Greg, and Brad, 2 brothers and 2 sisters of Switzerland, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
Our beloved Jackie went to be with her husband Darrell and the Lord on February 4, 2010.
